For professionals

Assessment and expert witness services

R-Space Child and Family Practice provides independent assessment, court reporting and expert witness services, alongside independent social work and social care services.

THE PANEL

Our panel of independent family law assessors

Our approach is child-centred, informed by an understanding of family relationships, and focused on children's welfare, safety and best interests.

R-Space operates a panel of independent family law assessors, all of whom have extensive experience in child protection and welfare and advanced assessment skills, including assessments relating to custody and access and recommendations on what is in a child's best interests.

Our assessors provide independent, balanced reports that consider children's needs, family relationships and the matters identified by the court. Each assessment is allocated to a professional with the appropriate qualifications and experience, all of whom are registered with CORU.

FOR THE COURTS

Court reports

Understanding children's needs, and hearing their voices.

Section 47

Family Law Act 1995

Section 47 reports provide the court with an independent assessment of matters affecting a child's welfare. The court may order a report on its own initiative or following an application by a party to the proceedings.

Depending on the court's directions, the assessment may involve meeting parents or guardians and children, observing family interactions, reviewing relevant information and consulting other professionals. The report presents findings and recommendations to assist the court in its decision-making. The author may also be required to attend court to give evidence.

Section 32

Guardianship of Infants Act 1964
An empty child-sized room: a small wooden chair beside a chest of drawers, with a planet mobile hanging overhead

Section 32 allows the court to obtain an expert report on a child's welfare, to appoint an expert to ascertain and convey the child's views, or both, in proceedings concerning guardianship, custody or access.

A welfare assessment considers the child's needs, family circumstances and matters identified by the court. A "voice of the child" report provides an opportunity for the child to express their experiences, wishes and feelings in a supportive, age-appropriate setting. The expert works independently, considers the child's age and maturity, and remains attentive to any pressures or influences affecting the expression of their views.

Section 20

Child Care Act 1991

Under Section 20, the court may direct Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, to investigate a child's circumstances where it considers that a care order or supervision order may be appropriate.

The investigation considers the child's safety and welfare, whether care or supervision proceedings are required, and whether services, assistance or other action are needed to support the child and family. R-Space can undertake assessment and reporting work to support this process where appropriately commissioned by Tusla, within the scope of the court's directions and Tusla's statutory responsibilities.

SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL CARE

Social work

Independent social work services

Our independent social work services provide assessment, professional advice and reporting in relation to children and families. Depending on the referral, this may include child welfare and safeguarding assessments, family assessments, reviews of care arrangements and support needs, and social work supervision and support services.

Work is undertaken by appropriately qualified, CORU-registered social workers, with a clear assessment brief and an emphasis on balanced analysis, the child's experience and practical recommendations.

Social care

Independent social care services

Our independent social care services focus on the everyday care, relationships and support needs of children, young people and families. Services may include assessments of care and support needs, access support, reviews of placement arrangements, family support, and advice to carers and professionals.

This work considers how care arrangements can promote safety, stability, participation and wellbeing, with recommendations tailored to the individual's needs and circumstances.

ACCESS AND SUPERVISION

Access assessment and supervision

R-Space has a beautifully appointed access and observation room, thoughtfully designed to help children and families feel safe, comfortable and welcome.

Within this setting, we independently assess access between parents and children, considering the quality of their interactions, parental responsiveness and the child's experience. These observations inform our assessment of the child's needs and recommendations for supporting access arrangements. We also provide follow-on access supervision options to help children and their families maintain relationships in a safe and meaningful way.

We also provide support services to children, young people and their parents using a systemic model of intervention. This approach considers difficulties within the context of family relationships and the wider systems around the family, helping strengthen communication, support relationships and respond to each family's needs.

If your team is looking for supervision

External supervision, reflective practice groups, training and consultation are a separate part of the practice, arranged with teams and organisations rather than commissioned case by case.
